Daft Punk Unchained (2015) Review

Daft Punk Unchained is a film dedicated to the iconic electronic dance music duo. It is an inspiring reminder of the lengths an artist can go for the love of his or her craft.

Daft Punk, comprised of Guy-Manuel dae Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, were once high school students who shared a passion for performing. They performed their music in small communal spaces in the early 1990s: a time when electronic music was an early concept often associated with underground alternative clubs.

When at last they found fame in the industry, it became a focal point to keep their identities discreet: thus, the infamous helmets and robot personas were born. Homem-Christo and Bangalter learnt early in the process how popularity can eventually break a man–a possible reason as to why they never revealed their true faces when performing.

Daft Punk Unchained demystifies the duo through various interviews with Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Skrillex, Michel Gondry, and Paul Williams. These diverse perspectives allow the documentary to explore the multi-faceted aspects of all Daft Punk represents.
